Lock Problems

Typical Lock Problems

Unlocking and locking doors, it happens so often we do not really think about it. Locks are an important part of our life, but how often do we think about it? As long as the key and lock works, we can go on our merry way. What about when things don’t work? Losing a key, getting locked out, a lock breaks, a key breaks or a door jams. Nowadays you may even have to worry about a broken electronic key. A problem like a broken lock or key is something no one wants to deal with, but it happens. So here are some common examples of problems and possible solutions.

When Keys Break

That small metal key may seem indestructible, but your key could end up in pieces. You are in a rush to get inside, one forceful turn trying to get the lock to open, next thing you know you are holding the top of the key the bottom stuck in the locking mechanism. It can be a frustrating situation, but don’t worry, it can happen to anyone. A locksmith is all the help you need to remove the stuck pieces, fix the locking mechanism and cut you a new key. The next time remember to go slow and let the key do its thing.

Slow and Seized Locks

Sometimes locks can get dirty and filled with grime. When this happens, the lock can operate slowly and start to stick or rub when unlocking it. If this happens do not use oil or grease, this will clog the lock more and cause more damage. However, if you are looking for an at home fix you can use graphite or silicone spray to loosen the lock. If a DIY trick isn’t what you are looking for, you can always hire a locksmith. We call this problem a slow lock.  When your key can be inserted, but not turned, then you have a seized lock and calling a locksmith is the best way to go.

Bolt And Door Latch

If you turn the deadbolt and it won’t rotate or you have to put your weight on it to close the door, then your latch is misaligned with the strike plate on the door jam. If the bolt or lock has completely stopped working, it’s time to call the professionals. A locksmith can check out the situation and quickly determine if it can be fixed or if it’s time for a new mechanism.
